Know Your Numbers
Viral load is a measurement of the amount of HIV virus in the blood. It is important to talk to your healthcare professional about getting your viral load as low as possible and keeping it there. Remember, a low viral load does not mean you are cured or that you don’t have HIV anymore.
CD4 cells, also called T cells, protect the immune system by fighting infections. Raising your CD4 cells may help improve your immune system and thus reduce the risk of death or opportunistic infections—infections that can happen when your immune system is weak. It is important to talk to your healthcare professional about getting your CD4-cell count as high as possible. Remember, a high CD4-cell count doesn’t mean you are cured or that you don’t have HIV anymore. People may still get opportunistic infections or other conditions that happen with HIV infection.
